<p>Jeffery Smith Associates is a small construction consultancy based in east London.
We come from a structural engineering background but find our building surveying knowledge and our architectural enthusiasm crucial to our work.</p>
<p>Jeffery Smith Associates are consulting structural engineers who specialise in design work for altering and repairing existing houses. Unlike some consulting structural engineers we also have a building surveyors background. Unlike building surveyors we can do calculations and prepare structural engineering designs. </p>
<p>Jeffery Smith became a chartered civil engineer in 1970. As an engineer he has seen housing of all sorts being built and worked on since the 1960s. He is an engineer who appreciates good architecture and good architects.</p>
<p>We have worked on houses with defects from all periods in the last 200 years. Frequently types of construction no longer seen are encountered. How to assess these at a time when building regulations are ever more complicated is quite an art. Building regulations will soon require buildings to be as near zero rated as far as energy use as possible. They will need to be air tight to a degree not required before.</p>
<p>We are consulting structural engineers based in Tower Hamlets east London. Much of our work is in Tower Hamlets east London. But east London is more than Tower Hamlets! We design for houses and buildings in Hackney, Newham, Islington, Wallthamstow and in other parts of London, both east and other parts as in Tower Hamlets.</p>
<p>Hackney includes many fine Victorian houses. Too often these have been neglected or altered inappropriately. For such houses to be improved properly consulting structural engineers with building surveyors and architectural background are needed. Often such renewal work needs to be done under the supervision of a suitably experienced chartered civil engineer.</p>
<p>There are few scientific means of assessing an existing house that may be more than 150 years old. Only expertise gained from years of assessing Victorian houses, many in Hackney, can guide towards alterations and repairs that will last for another 150 years.</p>
